What is Culture2

Culture2 is an independent net server that provides a variety of online services for projects and people. Culture2 was formally known as the myspinach server. It is coordinated out of Australia.

Its aim is to provide professional hosting services at accessible rates to projects and people working in the areas of media, arts, culture and justice. Culture2 has a focus on Australia and its immediate neighbourhood.

Why the name change?

The mySpinach server was established in October 2000. In early 2003, another project called SPINACH7 was initiated. Though there are some connections between the two projects they are completely independent of each other. It was felt the similarity of the names was creating too much confusion.

Also, after almost four years, the original motivations behind establishing the mySpinach server were no longer valid. Culture2 is the ideal name for the next phase in this independent net server story.

What else is different?

Culture2 is no longer hosted in Australia. Unfortunately, bandwidth costs have forced us to move to the United States. Also, the mySpinach provided many people and projects with no-cost or voluntary user-pay facilities.

With Culture2, hosting services will require payment. We'll create a rate-card that's accessible and if you definitely can't make a financial contribution we'll give you some pointers to no-cost services.

Can anyone apply for hosting at Culture2?

Culture2 is not open to everyone - it's a club server. Yep - it does sound a bit pretentious. But really, all it means is that we are trying to create a network that has an inclusion criteria! We'll be putting up more information about this soon.

What happens next?

That's not very clear at the moment. We'll have to wait and see!
